Sarah Barrett

DVM, PhD, DACVP (Clin Pathol, Director): US

Dr. Barrett is a native of southwest Virginia and completed her BS in Biology and DVM at Virginia–Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech. Before returning to Virginia Tech for a clinical pathology residency, she practiced small animal emergency medicine at practices in Houston and central Texas. She became board certified in 2014 and completed a PhD in autoimmune glomerulonephritis in 2015. Dr. Barrett spent the next 5 years as a clinical assistant professor with a joint appointment at Virginia–Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine and Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine before joining Zoetis in 2021 as the Director of Global Diagnostics Digital Cytopathology. When not in the office, she spends time with her family, wrangling many animals and working on her lavender farm.

Annie Bauman

DVM, MS, DACVP (Clin Pathol): US

Dr. Bauman grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas, and earned her DVM from Louisiana State University, where she quickly discovered her love for clinical pathology. While completing her residency training, also at LSU, she earned a master’s degree researching flow cytometry’s applications for understanding canine T-cell responses in cancer and inflammatory skin disease. Annie loves all things cytology and has special interest in small animal hematology, neoplasia and bone marrow disorders. She lives in New Orleans, where she and her husband spend as much time outside as possible with their dog, Jynx, and take full advantage of the city’s music and food scenes.

Sabrina D. Clark

DVM, PhD, DACVP (Clin Pathol), MRCVS: US

Originally from Texas, Dr. Clark earned her DVM from Oklahoma State University and then completed a small animal rotating medicine and surgery internship at Georgia Veterinary Specialists. She then spent 1 year in small animal general practice before completing her clinical pathology residency at Texas A&M University. She obtained board certification in 2016. During the second year of her residency, Sabrina was awarded a Zoetis-Morris Animal Foundation fellowship, which allowed her to earn her PhD, focusing on exploring the pathogenesis of chronic kidney disease in dogs. She completed her PhD in Veterinary Pathobiology in May 2019 and joined the Virtual Laboratory by Zoetis team in September 2021. Outside of clinical pathology, Sabrina’s interests include spending time with her young son, playing with their 4-legged fur babies, gardening and reading.

Stephen Crane

DVM, MS, ACVP board eligible (Clin Pathol): US

Dr. Crane is a native of Louisiana. He attended Louisiana State University, where he earned his BS in Biological Science in 2013 and his DVM in 2018. He then completed a residency in clinical pathology at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign in 2021 and also earned his MS in Veterinary Clinical Medicine. Outside of clinical pathology, Stephen enjoys weight lifting, cooking, gardening, home brewing and spending time with his 2 Rottweilers, Mishka and Yara.

Carol E. Haak

DVM, DACVECC, DACVP (Clin Pathol): US

Dr. Haak is a 2006 graduate of the Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine. After veterinary school, Carol completed both rotating and specialty small animal internships at Garden State Veterinary Specialists and the University of Missouri, respectively. This was followed by residency training in small animal emergency and critical care at the Animal Emergency Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She achieved ACVECC board certification in 2012 and practiced small animal emergency and critical care medicine for 6 years before pursuing a residency in clinical pathology. Carol finished her clinical pathology residency at Oklahoma State University in 2021 and achieved ACVP board certification the same year. Carol’s professional interests include cytology, hematology, transfusion medicine, fluid resuscitation and animal behavior. Outside the clinic and laboratory, Carol spends as much time as possible on a stand-up paddleboard with Maddie the Labrador.

June Huang

DVM, PhD, DACVP (Clin Pathol): US

Dr. June Huang is originally from Taipei, Taiwan. She received her DVM from the School of Veterinary Medicine at National Taiwan University in 2009. Following graduation, she worked in a small animal practice in Taiwan for a year before pursuing a Combined Pathology Residency/PhD program at the University of Georgia. June completed her Pathology PhD in 2014 and obtained board certification in 2015. She spent 6 years as a diagnostic pathologist with Antech Diagnostics before joining the Zoetis team in the summer of 2022. She enjoys being part of the Zoetis Global Diagnostics team and performing high-quality diagnostic service to benefit animal patients worldwide. June, her husband, their 2 young children and the family dog (Chloe) and cat (Chanel) reside in Atlanta, Georgia. In her free time, June loves to travel and explore outdoor activities with her family and friends.

Courtney Johnson

DVM, DACVP (Clin Pathol): US

Dr. Johnson grew up on the shores of Lake Superior and earned her BS in Biology from the University of Minnesota and her DVM from Ross University. She completed a rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Ocean State Veterinary Specialists in Rhode Island, where she subsequently worked as an emergency veterinarian. Because the Rhode Island winters weren’t cold enough, she returned to the University of Minnesota for a clinical pathology residency focused on improving the diagnostic utility of flow cytometry in diagnosing canine lymphoma. Dr. Johnson joined the Zoetis family in 2020 and is thrilled to be part of the Global Diagnostics team. Her professional interests include hematopoietic neoplasia, infectious disease and education. She loves enjoying the great Minnesota outdoors with her husband, daughter and 2 dogs, Brooks and Olive.

Sarah Johnson

Dr. Johnson is a native of Indiana and attended Purdue University for both veterinary school and her clinical pathology residency program. Mountains, water and wildlife spurred her move to the Pacific Northwest after she obtained ACVP board certification in 2012, and she has called Seattle home for many years. Dr. Johnson has worked in commercial diagnostics for the last 10 years, with a shift in focus to development and implementation of digital cytology. She is excited about the possibilities that the digital platform brings to the global veterinary community.

Ashley Leisering

DVM, MS, DACVP (Clin Pathol): US

Originally from the Chicago suburbs, Ashley has lived throughout the Midwest during her schooling and career. She went to Elmhurst University for her undergraduate studies and the University of Illinois for veterinary school, where she discovered her passion for clinical pathology. In 2018, she became a board-certified veterinary clinical pathologist after completing her residency and master’s degree at Purdue University. As a pathologist, she has worked in a primary reference laboratory and in referral hospitals and even in remote virtual positions. She enjoys all aspects of clinical pathology and has a particular interest in bone marrow evaluation and hematopoietic neoplasia. She also values teaching, case consultations and expanding the use of point-of-care digital pathology. Her hobbies include partaking in outdoor activities (hiking, swimming, “glamping”), helping with animal rescue and welfare, developing her stand-up comedy skills and relaxing with family and friends. She shares her home with 2 Terrier terrors, Suki and Sully, who are supervised by her cat, Howie.

Mary Leissinger

DVM, MS, DACVP (Clin Pathol): US

Dr. Leissinger is thrilled to be part of Zoetis Global Diagnostics, bringing over 10 years of experience in veterinary medicine and clinical pathology to support patient care and veterinarians around the world. She has served as a clinical assistant professor at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine, where she enjoyed working directly with veterinarians in primary care and across multiple specialties, supporting hematology and cytology diagnostic needs for companion animal, equine, large animal and exotic species. In 2019, she was nominated by her peers for and received the Early Career Award from the American Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology.

Her research interests have included all aspects of diagnostic clinical pathology as well as veterinary education. As an invited lecturer at UF, she has also given numerous continuing education talks at regional and national veterinary conferences and co-created a RACE-approved continuing education course for the NAVC institute. Dr. Leissinger completed her undergraduate and DVM training at Louisiana State University, where she was valedictorian of the 2010 veterinary class. She then completed a 1-year rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine, followed by a joint residency in clinical pathology and an MS at LSU. She has been practicing as an ACVP board-certified clinical pathologist since 2014.

Caitlyn Martinez

DVM, MS, DACVP (Clin Pathol): US

Caitlyn grew up in rural New Mexico, where she resides. She earned her BS degree from Kansas State University and her DVM from Colorado State University. She enjoyed Colorado so much during her studies that she stayed to complete her clinical pathology residency and MS, obtaining her board certification in 2018. Her research centered on iron regulation and diagnostics in several species. Since residency training, she has gained experience in both digital and traditional cytology. She joined the Zoetis Global Diagnostics team in the summer of 2022. Caitlyn has a special interest in digital cytology and its ability to transform cytology into a point-of-care diagnostic. She particularly appreciates consulting with submitting veterinarians to support them as they pursue diagnostic and therapeutic options for their patients. Outside of work, Caitlyn spends her time with her husband, trying to keep up with their 3 young sons and 2 dogs. She enjoys exploring the outdoors, reading, art, baking and board games.

José Daniel Cruz Otero

DVM, DACVP (Clin Pathol): US

Dr. Cruz Otero is originally from San Juan, Puerto Rico, and completed his DVM at Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2014. He then completed a small animal rotating internship in a private practice in Loveland, Colorado. Next, he practiced emergency medicine as an overnight ER doctor in a private practice in Dublin, California. Dr. Cruz Otero enjoyed the rush of emergency medicine, but his true passion was the diagnostic data that allow clinicians to make decisions on a day-to-day basis for their patients. He pursued a clinical pathology residency at Cornell University. Upon completion of his residency in 2019, Dr. Cruz Otero remained at Cornell University as a clinical instructor. In 2020, Dr. Cruz Otero joined the Zoetis Reference Laboratories at the Chicago location and joined the Virtual Laboratory by Zoetis in 2022. Within the clinical pathology realm, Dr. Cruz Otero enjoys cytopathology and the beauty behind “figuring out how” or “putting the pieces together” to make the most appropriate conclusion to help fellow colleagues and their patients. Outside of the work environment, Dr. Cruz Otero loves going to the beach, drawing, painting and hiking—but most importantly, spending time with family and friends.

Kristin Owens

DVM, DACVP (Clin Pathol): US

Dr. Owens is originally from Pennsylvania and completed her DVM studies at North Carolina State University. After graduating, she returned to her home state for residency training in clinical pathology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, earning her board certification in 2015. Kristin worked within a specialty hospital as a diagnostic pathologist in a commercial diagnostics laboratory for 6 years before joining Zoetis in November 2021. She has a love of cytology and a strong interest in the uses of artificial intelligence in veterinary medicine. She is an active member of both the ASVCP and ACVP and the recipient of the C.L. Davis Student Scholarship Award in 2014. She has peer-reviewed publications on topics including neuroscience, behavior and trauma, and clinical pathology. Away from the microscope, Kristin enjoys spending time baking, traveling and volunteering at school events with her 2 children. Her pet family consists of 2 feisty kittens, a 17-year-old turtle, 2 guinea pigs and assorted fish.

Claudio Petterino

Dr. Petterino earned his veterinary surgeon certification in 1991 from the University of Parma, a PhD in veterinary Internal Medicine from the University of Turin in 1995 and the title of Specialist in Toxicology from the University of Milan. Following 3 years in a clinical practice, Claudio spent 11 years as Assistant and Associate Professor of Veterinary Pathology at the University of Parma. Here, Dr. Petterino’s responsibilities included teaching, research in oncology and diagnostic activities, such as providing support to the university’s Veterinary Hospital.

Claudio spent some time at the University of Florida and the University of Wisconsin–Madison studying clinical pathology and passed his ECVCP board examination in 2009. In 2010, he started working in the United Kingdom in both large commercial diagnostic laboratories and contract research organizations. In 2014, Claudio became a fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists-UK. He is the primary author or co-author of more than 40 publications. Claudio‘s professional interests include clinical pathology in a wide range of species, oncologic pathology and comparative pathology.

Catherine Shoemake

DVM, MS, DACVP (Clin Pathol): US

Dr. Shoemake is originally from Tennessee, where she graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine in 2011. She began her veterinary career in general private practice, but after a few years, she rediscovered her love of pathology and became a clinical pathologist via training at the University of Missouri Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory. She now lives in Texas with her husband, who is also a veterinarian, and enjoys spending her free time exploring the great outdoors, reading, enjoying music and crafting.

Taryn Sibley

VMD, DACVP (Clin Pathol): US

Dr. Sibley is originally from the Washington, DC, metro area and attended college in Boston before attending veterinary school at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. She then completed a 1-year small animal rotating internship at a large private practice in southern Maryland before relocating to Raleigh for her clinical pathology residency at North Carolina State University. Since completing her residency and passing her boards in 2012, she has lived with her family, 3 cats and 2 dogs in Rhode Island. Her particular areas of professional expertise and interest include neoplasia, hematology and immunology. Dr. Sibley is also an avid pop culture enthusiast and loves reading and spending time at the beach.

Corry Yeuroukis

DVM, DACVP (Clin Pathol): US

Dr. Yeuroukis is a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and earned her DVM from the University of Minnesota in 2006. Following graduation, she was a small animal general practitioner for 8 years before deciding to pursue a residency in clinical pathology. Corry completed her clinical pathology residency training at the University of Georgia in 2017, earning her board certification that same year. She spent 4 years as a diagnostic pathologist with Antech Diagnostics before joining the Zoetis team in November 2021. Corry’s favorite aspect of clinical pathology at Zoetis is connecting with referring veterinarians in real time and providing diagnostic information that can help those veterinarians make the best decisions for their patients. Corry, her husband, their 2 young children and the family cat, Phoebe, reside in Maryland, where she works remotely as a member of the Zoetis Digital Pathology team. In her free time, Corry loves to read and spend time with her family members, who all love board games and being outside. Corry is an avid sports fan, with football and hockey being her favorites.
